From Nature April 2015
Organic Sculpture Exhibition
Gasworks Arts Park
The brief:
From Nature asks artists to respond the provocation: what would happen next if the energy and vitality of the park grew in self expression so that new forms became apparent, DNA began to change and evolve and surprising structures of transient beauty were made manifest?
Emerging from the ground, tree trunks, branches and walls, living sculptures will offer a window into the imagination. The materials used will be organic, such as leaves, twigs, twine, branches, moss, fruit, flowers, bamboo, cane, timber and stone.
Two sets of pieces were created :
The Project Reclaim: Organic Sculpture series is made from remnant fabrics and organic materials to create unique sculptural pieces.
These artworks predominately use the intrinsic properties of the Albert Park Lake Palms to create varied sculptural forms.
‘Fill the Void’ extenuates the inherent adaptive and flexible nature of trees, while the tipi shaped ‘Nests’ provide a safe home for discarded seedpods.
Combining rarely used materials of remnant fabric with natural fallen tree branches and empty seedpods that would otherwise be discarded, the pieces provide a more subtle environmental message about reuse and nurture.
